HMRC issues new trade-based money laundering handbook
The UK’s tax authority HMRC has created new guidance for trade-money laundering (TBML), which helps firms identify and tackle the activity.  
 
UK fraud losses surge in 2025  
A new report by UK Finance reveals that there were 2.09 million confirmed cases of fraud in the first half of 2025, which is a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2024. £629.3m in total was lost to fraud.  

Four African countries exit FATF grey list
South Africa, Mozambique, Nigeria and Burkina Faso have been removed from the FATF’s list of countries which have deficiencies in their AML regimes.  

FinCEN identifies $9 billion in Iranian shadow banking flows  
FinCEN has issued a Financial Trend Analysis (FTA), identifying approximately $9 billion in transactions linked to Iranian shadow banking networks that flowed through U.S. accounts in 2024.  

Donald Trump pardons Binance founder
U.S. President Donald Trump has pardoned Changpeng Zhao, founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison for pleading guilty to enabling money laundering.
